The student democracy
The Student Parliament
The Student Parliament (SP) is the highest elected body for students at UiO. Students have the right to participate in decision-making on all student-related matters at the University of Oslo.
The Student Parliament meets about once a month, and the meetings are open to everyone. There are 28 representatives in the Student Parliament. Everyone has the opportunity to raise issues for the Student Parliament, and we are obligated to follow up on the decisions made.
The Student Parliament elects six people to work full-time in an executive committee. They work on preparing issues for discussion and implementing the adopted policies.
The Executive Committee is the face of the Student Parliament, handling everything from media relations to answering questions and assisting with whatever you, as a student, might need help with. They are located at Villa Eika, the old Swiss-style villa next to the University Library, and they always appreciate it when someone stops by!
Faculty student councils
The faculty student councils are faculty-specific and work for the students at the faculty level. Each committee has two members on the faculty board and one member in the Student Parliament.
Here, you will find contact information and websites for all the student committees at the various faculties. Get in touch with your student committee if you want to get involved or have other questions.
Program and subject committees
Each study program has a program or subject committee that represents the students in department boards and/or program councils. The elected representatives work to improve the study program, the local learning environment, and the organization of subject-related social events. They also participate in meetings with the administration and staff at the department or program.
Students in councils and committees
At UiO, there is a wide range of central councils, committees, and boards that contribute to the operation and development of the university. Students appointed by the Student Parliament sit on these bodies.
The University board representatives
The University Board is the highest governing body at UiO. All decisions made by other bodies at UiO are done with authority delegated by the board. The board addresses major matters concerning the university's operations, including strategic work, UiO's overall budget, academic development at UiO, and the internal organization at UiO.
Agenda and meeting minutes can be found here.
Student political lists
The student political lists function somewhat like political parties for the Student Parliament and run in elections every year. All students at UiO can run on a list, and anyone can start their own list. The number and types of lists running for election vary from year to year.
The Welfare Council
The Welfare Council (VT) is an interest organization and a student political body for the over 72,000 students from the 26 institutions affiliated with the Students' Welfare Organization SiO. All institutions with over 1,500 students are directly represented in the Welfare Council, while the others are represented through a joint electoral assembly. UiO has the largest delegation in the Welfare Council. The representatives from UiO are elected through the Student Parliament. Read more about the Welfare Council on their website.
