Resolution against discrimination of Iranians in HE

The Student Parliament at the University of Oslo passed a resolution against discrimination of Iranians in higher education on September 23, 2014.

The Student Parliament notes:

  • That education should be free and open for all, and that students should be able to pursue their education regardless of their ethnicity, nationality or socioeconomic status.
  • That members of the Student Parliament have agreed with this on its meeting August 30-31, 2014.
  • That the Political Platform under 5.1 Solidarity states “The Student Parliament supports students struggle against violent and discriminatory regimes.”
  • That currently, the Norwegian government is denying education to students from Iran. They are being singled out directly because of their nationality and therefore, they are being discriminated against.
  • That Iranian students are currently campaigning to change this.

The Student Parliament believes:

  • That this systematic attack on student freedoms is something that must be stopped.
  • That the Student Parliament has a responsibility to challenge injustice when it directly affects students and potential students.
  • That any discrimination of a student on grounds of their nationality is an injustice.

The Student Parliament resolves:

  • To position itself PUBLICLY against this injustice and to release an official statement supporting Iranian student’s efforts to challenge this in all their social media platforms.
  • To write a letter to the rectorate of the University asking to do the same.
  • To endorse the Iranian Students campaign (SEDAI - Students Against Educational Discrimination of Iranians).
